Easter Club 2015

Ganz ehrlich kommt Ostern manchmal als ein Rätsel, eine Art Puzzle vor. Wir sollen wir so eine Geschichte verstehen, die so eine traurige, gewaltätige Seite hat, aber dann so eine unglaubliche "Happy Ending" hat? Und was bedeutet diese Geschichte für unser Leben? If we're really honest with ourselves, Easter is a bit of a puzzle. How do we make sense out of a story that is so unbelievably tragic on the one hand, but at the same time so joyful? And what meaning does this story for our lives?

Das wollen wir mit den 14 Kindern in der OsterAG entdecken. Wir fingen diese Woche an mit einer Geschichte, "Das Geheimnis von Ostern" an, die uns hilft zu verstehen, warum es eine Fastenzeit und eine Osterzeit gibt.  That is what the fourteen children in Easter Club and I want to explore this year. So we began with a story of sorts called "The Mystery of Easter", which helps to explain why we have both Lent and the Easter season.

Vielleicht gibt es etwas in dem lilafarbenen Beutel, der uns helfen kann? Maybe there is something in the bag below that can help us?

Puzzleteile . . .  was wird's, wenn sie alle zusammen kommen? Hmmm . . . Puzzle pieces. I wonder what we'll have when we put them together?

Ah so, ein Kreuz. Ein ernstes und etwa trauriges Kreuz. Ah . . . a cross. A serious and somewhat sad cross.

Aber dieses Kreuz hat eine andere Seite, so wie Ostern. Die Zeit vor Ostern, als Jesus gekreuzigt wurde, war ernst und traurig. Aber danach ist er auferstanden. Er war mit seinen Freunden und er ist mit uns jetzt. Manchmal kann eine traurige Zeit und eine sehr glückliche Zeit mit einander wirken, sodass eine tiefe, lang anhaltende Freude entsteht. So ist das Geheimnis von Ostern. But this cross has another side to it! Easter has two sides: a serious and sad side when Jesus was crucified. But then he was resurrected and he was with his friends as he is with us now. Sometimes a sad time and very happy time can work together to produce a deep joy. And that is the mystery of Easter.

In der Kreativphase danach dürften die Kinder eine Aktivität aussuchen um über Ostern weiter nachzudenken. As a creative response to the story, the children could choose and move between the following activities:

1) Einen Ostergarten mit Naturmaterial, Ton und Ostergras bauen. Build an Easter garden with nature materials, clay and wheat grass

2) Das eigene Kreuzpuzzle machen. Make their own cross puzzle

 3) Eine Model von Jerusalem aufbauen und Jesu letzte Woche entdecken. Build a model of Jerusalem and discover Jesus' last week 

4) Malen mit Farbe. Paint whatever is on their minds!

5) Die Kirchenuhr auseinander machen und wieder zusammenstellen. Take apart and put together our "church clock".

Danke meiner Co-Erzieherin, Melinda (unten), haben wir ein kleines Fest mit Paprika und Banana-Muffins gefeiert. Die Kenner (die, die schon mal in einer AG von uns waren) freuen sich schon auf die kommenden Brownies! And last but not least, we ended out time with a small feast. This week, thank to Melinda, my co-teacher (below), we had red peppers and banana muffins. Yum, yum!

Easter Club 2014 Week 1/ Oster AG Woche 1

Am 17.3 fing die OsterAG 2014 mit 15 SchülerInnen aus der lokalen Grundschule an. In dieser AG verwenden wir die Prinzipien und Strukur der Religionspädagogik namens Godly Play. Das Ziel der Montessori-orientierter Pädagogik ist  - nach dem Motto "Hilf mir selbst zu tun"  - Kindern zu ermöglichen selbst ihre Spiritualität in der christlichen Tradition und eine Sprache dafür zu entwickeln.  On March 17, we kicked off this year's Easter Club with 15 children from our local elementary school. If you are new to this blog, we incorporate the principles and structure of Godly Play, a Montessori-based concept of Christian education for children. In Godly Play, we "help children to help themselves" in discovering a relationship with God and developing a language to express spiritual experiences and thoughts. 

Die gemeinsame Zeit fing mit einer Geschichte an. "Das Geheimnis von Ostern" erzählt, warum man Zeit braucht um sich an so groß ein Geheimnis wie Ostern zu nähern. We began our time together with a story called "The Mystery of Easter", which helps children understand why there are six weeks of preparation before Easter.

Unten habe ich eine Tüte mit der liturgischen Farbe, und drin gibt es Puzzleteile. Die Kinder helfen mir herauszufinden, was das mag sein. (Warum ich die Hand über meinen Mund habe, keine Ahnung . . . !) Here I have a bag with the liturgical color of the season, and in it are puzzle pieces. The children are helping me figure out what these strangely shaped pieces could be. (Why I have my hand over my mouth, I have no idea . . . !)

Ah, es ist ein Kreuz. Aus 6 Puzzleteilen. Ein Teil für jede Woche. Das sind mehr Wochen als beim Advent. Vielleicht ist Ostern noch ein größeres Geheimnis als Weihnachten? Ah, it's a cross. A cross with six pieces. A puzzle piece for each week. That's more weeks of preparation than for Christmas. Maybe Easter is an even bigger mystery than Christmas?

Schaut, das Kreuz ist zweifarben. Lila ist eine ernste, etwa traurige Farbe. Und weiss ist die Farbe der purer Freude. Vielleicht ist das so, weil Ostern beides hat: eine traurige Seite und eine andere Seite voll mit Freude.  Look, the cross has two colors. Purple is a serious, even sad color. And white is the color of joy. Maybe that's because Easter has both a serious, sad side to it, but also one of pure joy. 




Kinder finden diese Geschichte toll, einmal wegen der geheimvolle Puzzleteile, und auch weil sie erzählt, was sie schon intuitiv über Ostern spüren. Es gibt eine tragische Seite in Jesu Kreuzigung, aber die Auferstehung stellt alles auf den Kopf und bringt Freude.  The kids always love this story, because of the mysterious puzzle pieces, and because it articulates what many of them sense in Easter already. There is a profoundly tragic side of Easter in Jesus' crucifixion, but the resurrection turns everything on its head and fills us with joy. 

Nach der Geschichte wurden die Kinder zu einer Kreativphase eingeladen. Hier konnten sie Aktivitäten aussuchen, die ihnen helfen ihre Gedanken weiter zu verarbeiten. Obwohl ihre Kunstwerk mag nicht mit dem ersten Blick "geistlich" aussehen, drücken Kinder ihre Erfahrungen mit Gott anders als Erwachsene aus. After the story, the children are invited to a Response Time in which they are able to choose activities that help them make meaning out the words they have heard or out of some other spiritual experience that they have had. Their creations may not appear "spiritual" to us at the first glance, but children process their experiences differently than adults do. 

Hier erzählte und illustrierte ein Kind die eigene Geschichte mit Wasser vermalbare Stifte. Here a child illustrates and tells his own story at a table with water soluble crayons. 

Diese Kinder malten Steine mit permanenten Filzstiften. These children are decorating rocks with permanent markers. 

An diesem Tisch bastelten die Kinder Ostergrußkarten. Es gab auch eine Tabelle mit historischen christlichen Symbolen und ihre Bedeutungen, falls die Kinder sie in ihren Designs einbeziehen wollten. At this table, the children are making Easter cards. I made a table with historical Christian symbols and what they mean, in case the children wanted to ponder some of these symbols.

Bei dieser Station konnten die Kinder ein Modell von Jerusalem mit Bauklötzen bauen. Es gab eine Karte dazu mit der aüßeren Mauer der Stadt und den unterschiedlichen Orten, wo Jesus in der Passionswoche anwesend war. Here the children could build a model of Jerusalem with wooden blocks. We provided them with a map that also has the various places that Jesus visited during his last week. 

Eine Jesus-Figur und Ostereier waren auch mit dabei. Jedes Ei hatte eine Nummer darauf, die zu einem Ort auf der Landkarte passte. Und in jedem Ei gab es noch einen kleinen Gegenstand, der etwas vom Ort and Jesu erzählte. Damit konnten die Kinder die Passionswoche selber entdecken. A figure of Jesus and Easter eggs were also provided. A number on each egg corresponded to a place on the map. Inside the egg was a small object that told something about that place. For example, a chalice was inside the egg that corresponded to the Upper Room where the Last Supper took place.

Und letztens haben wir Papierblumen gebastelt um Gottes Schöpfung im Frühling zu feiern. Die Blumen werden wir an einem Zweig kleben, damit man die fertige "Strauß" in eine Vase stellen kann. And finally to celebrate God's renewal of creation each spring, we starting making paper flowers to glue onto a branch. You can see my sample in the middle of the table in a vase. 

Der erste Schritt war das Papier zu bemalen, um nächste Woche die Blumen zu basteln. The first step was to make our own paper, from which to sculpt the flowers. 

Es war eine wunderschöne Art zum Osterfest vorzubereiten! Woche 2 kommt bald! 
It was a wonderful way to prepare for Easter!

Easter Club 2013 Part 1

Obwohl es immer noch Kälte und Schnee hier in Berlin gibt und Frühling nirgendwo zu spüren ist, fing die OsterAG 2013 trotzdem mit 14 Grundschulkindern an!  Although it is frosty and snowy here in Berlin with spring nowhere in sight, Easter Club 2013 began last week with 14 children from our local elementary school. 

Die gemeinsame Zeit begann mit der Godly Play-Geschichte, "Das Geheimnis von Ostern". Diese poetische Erzählung half uns zu verstehen, warum man überhaupt eine ernstere Vorbereitungszeit wie die Fastenzeit gebraucht um danach Ostern richtig mit Freude feiern zu können. Die Kinder zogen 6 Puzzleteile von einem geheimnisvollen Beutel - einen Teil für jede der 6 Wochen in der Fastenzeit. We began our time with a Godly Play story called "The Mystery of Easter". This poetic story helps children to grasp how the more serious season of Lent prepares us to joyfully celebrate Easter. The children pull 6 puzzle pieces out a bag - one for each week of Lent. 

Unten bringen zwei Kinder alles zusammen. Daraus wird ein ersthaftes und trauriges Kreuz. Das ist die eine Seite von Ostern, die Kreuzigung von Jesu. Here two children discover that the pieces come together to form a purple cross that is both serious and sad. 

Und hier ein Junge endeckt, dass Ostern auch eine andere Seite hat, die sogar  wunderschön ist. Here a boy helps us discover that Easter has another side - one that is beautiful and full of joy. 

Wir erfuhren, dass Ostern "uns von innen nach außen verwandelt". Und es kann sein, wenn man eine traurige oder ernste Zeit erlebt und danach eine richtig glückliche Zeit auch erlebt, ist manchmal das Ergebnis eine tiefe, lang anhaltende Freude. Das ist das Geheimnis von Ostern. We learned that Easter "changes us from the inside out and turns everything upside down". And sometimes, when a sad or serious time is followed by a very happy one, the result can be a deep long-standing joy. And this is the mystery of Easter.

Wir bekamen auch Besuch von der beliebten Religionslehrerin an unserer Schule, die mit uns Frühlings Lieder sang! We were also treated to a visit by our school's beloved religion teacher, who led us in some very fun songs!

Jede Woche nach der Geschichte und einem Ergründungsgespräch, gibt es eine Kreativphase mit verschiedenen Angeboten. In dieser Zeit dürfen die Kinder eine Beschäftigung aussuchen um zu reflektieren.  Each week, after the story and a time of "wondering" about the story, we have a Response Time where the children can reflect on the story they just heard or on anything else that might be on their hearts. 

Nach den Prinzipien der Montessori-Pädagogik, entscheiden die Kinder selbst, wie sie die Zeit verbringen und wie lange sie bei einer Aktivität bleiben. Following the principles of Montessori, the children are allowed to choose from activities at different stations and spend as much time as they like playing, creating and exploring.

Ein Angebot, die wir immer zur Verfügung haben, ist das Spielmaterial von der Geschichte, die gerade erzählt wurde, und von anderen Geschichten aus der Bibel. Das Material steht auf und unter eine Kirchenbank, die ich als "Regale" verwende, und die Kinder nehmen was sie wollen und spielen damit. One "station" is the Focus Table and "shelves" (in reality a bench at the church!) directly behind the storytelling circle. On the shelves, one can find the story that has just been told as well as materials for other stories from the Old and New Testament.

Hier spielt ein Mädchen mit dem Gleichnis, "Die Kostbare Perle". Here a child examines the parable, "The Pearl of Great Price". 

Die zweite Station (unten) war eine Filzunterlage mit einem "Weg", der zum Kreuz und dem leeren Grab führt. Daneben gab's "Auferstehungseier", also Plastikeier erfüllt hit Gegenständen, die von der Passionswoche und Auferstehung erzählen. Hier konnten die Kinder die Gegenstände auf den Weg hinliegen und mehr über die Passionswoche entdecken. The second station (below) was a felt underlay with a "path" to the cross and empty tomb. Next to it was a set of Resurrection Eggs, plastic eggs filled with objects that tell the story of Jesus' Passion and Resurrection, so that the children could explore the eggs and lay the objects along the path. Das dritte Angebot war die Möglichkeit "Gebetschalen" für die Fastenzeit aus Ton zu machen. Die Co-Lehrerin, Melinda, gab den Kindern ein paar Tips mit dem Ton. (Ich muss hier hinfügen, dass Melinda eine ausgezeichnete Kollegin ist, die höchstsensibel und liebevoll mit den Kindern umgeht.) Our third station was creating Lenten prayer pots out of clay. My co-teacher, Melinda, is demonstrating a clay technique to the children. (I'll just add here that Melinda is an amazing co-teacher, who is so sensitive to the children's needs.)

In die Schalen zu Hause kommen jede Woche kleine Gegenstände, die uns an Gott und die Ostereschichte errinern. Im Foto unten stecken die Kinder die 6 Gegenstände in eine Tüte, die sie mit der Gebetsschale nach Hause bringen. The pots are to be set out during Lent and the children can place a small object in them each week to remind them about an aspect of God and their relationship to him. 

Hier sind ein paar von den fertigen Schalen. (Sie wurden im Suppenteller gelegt um den Transport nach Hause zu erleichtern.) Some of the finished prayer pots decorated with nature materials. (They are in soup bowls to make them easier to transport home.)

Und zu guter Letzt gab es eine Station mit Ölkreide. Diese Angebot ist sehr wichtig in der Godly Play-Pädagogik, weil es kein "Projekt" ist und gibt den Kindern Freiraum um ihre Gedanken über alles Mögliches auszudrücken. (Ich habe auch eine gute Werbung für die Ölkreide gemacht, indem ich sagte, dass mit Ölkreide ist sowie mit Butter zu malen. Welches Kind möchte das nicht ausprobieren?!) And last but not least, the fourth station was drawing with oil pastels. This is a particularly important station, because it is not a "project" and the children have complete freedom to draw anything they wish. I did give the oil pastels good advertisement, though, by telling the kids that they were "like drawing with butter". Come on, what kid wouldn't want to draw with butter? :)

OsterAG (zusammen mit den AGs in September und Advent) ist wirklich der Hohepunkt meines Jahres! Melinda und ich geniessen zutiefst jeden Moment mit den Kindern, und wir lernen soviel von ihnen als sie von uns. Easter Club (along with the other two clubs that we do in September and at Advent) really is the highlight of my year! Melinda and I savor each moment with the children and learn as much from them as they learn from us.

OsterAG 2012 / Easter Club 2012

 Mit 16 Kindern aus einer Berliner Grundschule und viel Freude fing die Oster AG 2012 an. Das ist das dritte Jahr die AG zu veranstalten und manche von den Kindern sind all drei Jahren mit dabei gewesen. Sowie das Ostergras, das wir gerade eingepflanzt haben, macht es mir so viel Freude diese Kinder beim Wachsen zu sehen und ein Stück begleiten zu können. Easter Club 2012 began last week with 16 children from our local elementary school. This is the third year that we have organized the club and some of the same children have attended all three years. Like the Easter grass that we planted this week, it has been a joy to watch them grow!

Dieses Jahr haben wir's vor, neben den Bibelgeschichten und Kunstaktionen einen Seniorenheim im Kiez zu besuchen. Die Kinder werden ein kurzes Programm verantstalten und ein bisschen Osterfreude weitergeben. Da solche Einrichtungen bekommen Anfragen am meisten zu Weihnachten, haben wir gedacht, warum nicht zu Ostern? In addition to hearing stories that help us reflect on Easter and making art, we have decided to take the children to a senior citizen’s home in the last week of the Club, where they will put on a small program and spread some Easter joy. Since Senior centers are usually flooded with requests at Christmas, we thought, why not come at Easter instead?

Zum Anfang haben wir eine "Mini-Geschichte", "Das Geheimnis von Ostern" gehört.  In dieser Handlung puzzeln die Kinder ein lila- und weissfarbenes Kreuz zusammen um den Rätsel von der Ostergeschichte besser verstehen zu können. Hier wird auch durch die Farben die zwei Seiten von Ostern betont, die traurige Seite und die frohliche Seite, die nicht von einander getrennt werden können.  This week, we heard two stories: a mini-version of “The Mystery of Easter” and “Creation”.  The first story is one of the best ways that I know of how to communicate to children the importance and reasoning behind the season of Lent. It also seeks to share both the sadness and joy of Easter, that both are essential and cannot be separated for one another. (If you want to know more about this story, click here and here.) 

Dann gingen wir zurück zum allerersten Anfang mit der "Schöpfung", wo wir Gottes wunderschöne Geschenke an uns bewundert haben, z.B. die Sonne, die Sterne, die Tiere, das Wasser, usw. Oft nehmen wir diese Geschenke nicht wahr, weil sie einfach so groß sind! Und die Vorosterzeit ist eine passende Zeit darüber nachzudenken, da die Natur gerade im Gang ist sich zu erneuen. The Creation story helps children to see the beautiful gifts God has given us that we often don’t even notice, because they are so big and important like the sun, stars, animals and water. With nature renewing itself this time of year, it a great time to ponder these gifts.

Die Geschichte beginnt mit der Frage: "Was war das großartigste Geschenk, das du jemals bekommen hast?" The story begins by asking the question, “What was the greatest gift you ever received?” 

"Mein Hochbett". "Mein rotes Kuschelkissen." "Meine Taufe." “My bunk bed.” “My red cuddle-cushion.” “My baptism.” 

Dann wird die Geschichte von 1.Mose mit Bildern auf Holzbrettern erzählt. Der letzte Tafel ist mit Absicht leer, damit die Kinder selber entscheiden wie sie sich am besten ausruhen und wo ihr lieblings Ort ist über Gottes Geschenke nachzudenken. Then, the storyteller recounts the text in the first chapter of Genesis using simple drawings on wooden boards. At the end of each day, the storyteller makes the gesture of a blessing over each picture and repeats God’s words, “It is good.” The last board is intentionally left blank so that the children can imagine how they like to rest and their favorite place to be to think about God’s wonderful gifts.

Während des "Ergründungsgespräch" am Ende stellte ich den Kindern vier Fragen. During our “Wondering” at the end, I asked the four questions typical of this genre of Godly Play story:

• Welcher Teil der Geschichte hat dir am besten gefallen? What part of the story did you like best?
• Welcher Teil ist wohl der wichtigste? What part is the most important?
• Gibt es einen Teil, der etwas von dir erzählt? Is there a part that tells something about you?
• Gibt es einen Teil, den wir weglassen könnten, und trotzdem alles haben, was wir für die Geschichte brauchen? Is there something we can leave out and still have everything we need for the story?

Ich musste lachen (innerlich!) als ein 1.Klässler erzählte, dass er den Ruhetag weglassen würde. "Ich mag keine Pause machen," meinte er. Als seine Englischlehrerin kann ich die Wahrheit dieser Aussage nur bestätigen! I got very tickled by a first grade boy during the last question who answered that he would leave out the day of rest. Because “I don’t like to take breaks!” And since I also have him in English class, I can attest to the truth of this statement!

Christine-Maria, die Co-Leiterin der AG, half uns ein paar neue Lieder zu lernen, die wir eventuell beim Seniorenheim vorsingen werden. Da Musik leider nicht meine Stärke ist, habe ich mich darüber gefreut! My co-leader, Christina-Maria, helped us learn some songs that we will be singing at the senior citizen’s home. Since music is not one of my strengths, I am thrilled to have her doing this!
