<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><b>In Woche 3 hörten wir den zweiten Teil der Geschichte, "Die Gesichter Christi". Eine Stelle ging um die Heilung des Bartimäus. Da waren alle Kinder auf einmal total begeistert, als ob Bartimäus irgendein Rock-Star wäre. Wir vermüten, dass unser Kollege in der Schule letztens auch die Geschichte im Religionsunterricht behandelt hat.: ) </b> In Week 3, we finished the story called "The Faces of Easter" which culminates in Jesus' Passion and Resurrection. A part of the story involved Jesus' ministry and the story of Bartimaeus being healed. When I said Bartimaeus' name, there was an audible gasp from the kids and excitement, as if Bartimaeus were some sort of rock star. I have to think that my colleague at school had recently covered the story in religion class!</span></div>

Jedes Kind würde eingeladen einen Gegenstand im Raum auszusuchen, der etwas mehr von der Geschichte erzählen könnte. Die Kinder waren so begeistert von dieser Art von Ergründungsgespräch, dass wir 3 Runden gemacht haben! </b> We wondered together this time using objects from the room. Each child could find an object and place it next to a picture that might tell more of the story. The children found this particularly exciting and we ended up doing three rounds of wondering!</span></div>

Es hat den Kindern gefallen, dass die Jünger so überrascht waren und dass Jesus mit ihnen Brot teilte.</b> Week 4 began with the story of the two Emmaus disciples unexpectantly meeting Jesus after his resurrection. The children liked how the disciples were so surprised and that Jesus broke bread with them. </span></div>

It's been 9 years since I started doing Easter clubs. Melinda, my co-teacher, and I remarked this year how relaxed we've become and how much easier it all is after all these years of experience.</span><br />

In order to help the children understand how to use them, we made a life size prayer labyrinth on the floor. Then, during Response Time, we allowed the children one at a time to go into the room, hold a purple tea light candle and walk the labyrinth, taking as much time as they wanted and needed.</span></div>

Karin began by showing us how a Montessori teacher would assist a child in a lesson. Danach gab es ein "Fest" von kreativen Angeboten. Jeder legte los und gestaltete, was er wollte. Und dann gab es auch etwas zu essen! </span></b> In the evening, we treated to a live version of the Parable of the Great Banquet by Heidi and Hans-Jürgen. Then, everyone got to participate in a Response Time "Feast". Creative materials were laid out everywhere, and everyone could just dig into the fun! And there was some food later on in the evening, too. : )</span></div>

Bedeutung und Chancen der Freiarbeit in der Montessoripädagogik und bei Gott im Spiel". ("Gott im Spiel" ist die Weiterentwicklung von Godly Play im deutschsprachigen Raum.) Obwohl die Kreativphase ein sehr wichtiger Element in der Godly-Play-Struktur ist, verbringt man meistens weniger Zeit damit bei Kursen und Fortbildungen. Außerdem haben Erzähler und Begleiter selten die Möglichkeit bei einer Kreativphase mitzumachen, da wir fast immer die leitenden Erwachsenen im eigenen Umfeld sind. Deswegen haben wir uns darauf gefreut, zusammen zu spielen, selbst kreativ zu sein und neue Impulse für die eigene Praxis zu kriegen.</span><span style="color: #8e7cc3;"> </span></b>Our theme this year was "Response Time: Support and Encouragement of the Godly Play Process in the Montessori Tradition". Although the Response Time is an important element in the Godly Play concept, it gets much less "air time" at trainings than the mechanics of telling a story. Furthermore, most GP practitioners don't have very many opportunities to participate in Response Time themselves, since they are usually leading the lessons. So we were all very excited to get a chance to play together, be creative and get some new ideas for our own practice. </span></div>

Die Bibel liegt nahe den Wurzeln, dann "blühen" die Bücher von Jerome Berryman, und oben wachsen die neuen Bücher von Gott im Spiel, die Weiterentwicklung von Godly Play im deutschsprachigem Raum. (Mehr folgt über die Bücher in einer anderen Post!)</span></b> Below you can see Ulrike telling the story of how the books came to be, and Hans Jürgen painting a tree (much like the Mustard Seed!), show the development of our GP literature in German. The base of the tree is the Bible, followed by Jerome Berryman's original works, and then the latest books that have developed out of the German-speaking expression of Godly Play called "Gott im Spiel". Time does indeed fly, so much so that it makes my head spin! Our son is now 14 years old, and our daughter is 12. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">At any age, it is important for children to have a voice in family traditions, but as my children have grown older, it has become particularly important for them to help decide what will be meaningful for them. I want to be sensitive to the fact that they are older and changing and avoid anything that might be too childish for their tastes. </span><br />

Both of them insisted on the "desert" with the People of God figures. I added the candle and the Celtic cross. It was very interesting for me to see what had been special to them over the years. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">On our kitchen table, we placed a white Easter candle surrounded by 6 purple tea lights for each week of Lent. After Easter, we will replace them with white tea lights for each week of Eastertide and a red tea light for Pentecost. My daughter also plans to decorate the Easter candle. </span><br />

Sie handelt um Jesus in unterschiedlichen Lebensphasen, von seiner Kinderheit bis zum Tod und Auferstehung.</span></b> This week we began a two part story called "The Faces of Christ" that gives us glimpses of Jesus in every stage of his life, culminating in his death and resurrection.</span><br />

The Old Testament stories and prophets showed the way and the people had some very specific ideas of how the Messiah would be. </span><br />

With this group, we did some serious playing! We laughed together quite a bit, and wondered about a great deal of things. Our unofficial motto was "Godly <i>Play,</i> not Godly <i>School</i>"!</span><br />

There was nothing to fear at this training, because Alesya walked me an extra 8-10 km each evening after the training ended to make sure that I saw all of Minsk. (This was my third trip here, but the first time that I actually saw the city!) </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Godly Play Germany offers Taster Days and Core Trainings all over Germany as well as a bi-annual conference. Over the years, though, the Godly Play community has expressed a need for other things like further training, community with other storytellers, and spiritual retreats. Because of this, the trainers have developed something called an "Aufbaukurs", a weekend that includes a new aspect of Godly Play to explore, some training, and many elements of a spiritual retreat. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In March, my friend Heidi, who is a trainer in Wittenberg, and I led such a weekend in the city of Halle with 10 other women from Saxony, Berlin, and the Black Forest. Together we explored the Old Testament enrichment stories that deal with suffering and conflict: The Garden of Eden, Ruth and Job, and some Godly Play-inspired stories about the teachings of Jesus: The Lord's Prayer, The Sermon on the Mount, Blessing the Children, and the Emmaus Disciples. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I'd like to tell you about some of the highlights. One was the community aspect. While some religious movements divide people over doctrine and other issues, Godly Play really brings people together. The twelve of us were from different backgrounds and confessions, but each woman came with a genuine openness that quickly established a trusting, sharing atmosphere.</span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Our Wondering conversations after each story were thought-provoking and uplifting. Most of the time, I wonder with children and people that are new to Godly Play. I learn so much from these two groups of people, but it was really different to wonder together with a group of diverse, mature women who practiced Godly Play themselves.</span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">We also experienced two full Response Times sessions, where each of us could creatively explore however we wished. For some of the women, this was challenging, because they are usually accompanying children, and the children are the ones doing the creating. For others, it was pure joy to be able to sit </span><span style="font-size: large;">for a longer period of time </span><span style="font-size: large;">and creatively respond to the stories without being interrupted. It was freeing for me, because I realized that I don't often regularly make time for a creative response to Scripture. One of the things that I am "bringing home" from this weekend is to make time for that on a weekly basis in response to Lectio Divina.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Our time ended on Sunday morning with an interactive, ecumenical worship service centered around the Lord's Prayer. Each of us then made our way home with our spiritual tanks filled and excited about our further path with God and the children in our lives. </span><br />

(I recommend high-quality permanent markers for this activity.) And then, the children could choose a Bible verse to write on the tag and tie it to the birch wood. As always, the children had the freedom to come up with their own symbol or Bible verse if they wanted to. </span></div>

After the story, I passed around the basket and let each child take a few eggs, so that we could look at them together. Recently, my husband and I became godparents again, this time of a 10-year-old girl and an 7-year-old boy. We were so thrilled to be godparents again, and naturally, I immediately began to think about a meaningful gift that I could present them with. </span><br />

Diesmal sind wir nicht gleich in die Ostergeschichte hineingesprungen, sondern haben wir uns mit den Würzeln vom Passahfest im Alten Testament beschäftigt. Warum hat Jesus das Passahfest kurz vor seinem Tod gefeiert, und was hätte dieses Fest mit Ostern zu tun?</span></b> Easter Club got off to a great start with 12 children from our local elementary school. This year, we did not jump straight into the Easter story. Instead, we went a little further back to the Old Testament to find out about the Passover Fest that Jesus celebrated right before he was sentenced to death, and what sort of connections this feast might have to the story of Easter.</span></div>

Nach der Geschichte haben wir und Fragen gestellt, was wir in der Geschichte gehört und selber erlebt haben. Z.B., was uns am besten gefallen hat, warum Jesus manchmal das "Lamm Gottes" genannt wird, und wie das Passahfest entstanden ist. Wir haben auch die Themen von Tod, Hoffnung und neuem Leben in beiden Geschichten besprochen, und ein Mädchen ging damit einen Schritt weiter mit ähnlichen parallel Gedanken in der Schöpfungsgeschichte.</b></span> We also ate some real unleavened bread (from a local Kosher store) to "taste" more of the story. Afterwards, we wondered together about what we noticed and experienced in the story. What we liked best, why Jesus might sometimes be called the "Lamb of God", and how the Passover feast came to be. We also talked about the themes of death and the hope of new life in both the Exodus story and the Easter story, with one girl going a step further and drawing parallels with the story of the Garden of Eden. </span></div>

At the beginning of the school year, we told the Godly Play creation story and then did a series on each of the aspects of creation. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">We had an absolutely delightful Epiphany service with our 4th and 5th graders yesterday from our local elementary school, and I just wanted to share a few glimpses with you.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Instead of telling the story of the Three Kings, we decided to focus on the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, and why the Three Kings presented them to Baby Jesus.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">We began by asking the children what they would have given Baby Jesus. Answers ranged from things like toys and pacifiers to medicine and love. Then, we showed the children examples of the gifts and explained the meanings behind them. The church we were in has just been restored and there is a beautiful golden star on the ceiling that served as visual of the gold that foretold Jesus' kingship. I burned some frankincense, the symbol of Jesus' priesthood, near the altar, and a colleague passed around a bottle of myrrh preparation, a symbol of Jesus' humanity, from the local pharmacy. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As a response, the children could write down what they wanted to give Jesus, and wrap it in a small parcel to lay in the manger. </span><br />
