Art Project: Sculptures from Clay and found Nature Material

Working with clay is a tactile experience that seems to be an essential part of a child's development. Making sculptures out of clay and found objects from nature is a great way to offer open-ended play and encourage creativity. This project also allow, for easy set-up in the art room,  is cost effective, and is also wildly popular with children. They work for an art class setting, the Godly Play classroom, and at home.

All you need is:

- clay (I use the air drying variety)

-  glue

- a few objects from nature, such as leaves, sticks, rocks, moss, etc.

- a little imagination (and children have no lack this!)

Sometimes we go to the park and find the nature treasures ourselves  . . . 

And other times I bring nature material and set it out on a tray to save time . . . 

The children then begin to sculpt, and usually one does not have to give them any suggestions of what to make. They flow with their imaginations and come up with the most amazing things. Sometimes, at Easter I add eggshells or cress seeds to the mix, as in the picture below.

It is important to have glue available and show the children how to glue pieces together at the "joints", so that they do not fall apart when drying. In the picture below, we glued the figure's head to the body as well as the walnut and body to the bark.

Ein lieblings und einfaches Kunstproject von mir besteht daraus, Skulpturen aus Ton und Naturmaterial zu gestalten. Man braucht dafür nur den Ton, Naturmaterial und Kleber. Die Kinder denken dann super kreative Sachen aus. 

Manchmal gehen wir draußen und sammeln die Naturschätze selber und manchmal bringe ich sie um Zeit zu sparen. Wichtig ist den Kindern zu zeigen, an welchen Stellen den Bastelleim benutzt werden soll, damit nichts beim Austrocknen kaputt geht. 

Die Ergebnisse sind echt wunderschön!

Into the Woods! / Waldausflug!

Es ist manchmal vorteilhaft als Gemeindegründung keine eigene Räumlichkeiten zu haben. Dann hat man die Freiheit Kindergottesdienste in kreativen Orten zu veranstalten. Am ersten Sonntag im Juni haben wir einen Waldausflug-Kindergottesdienst für die Kinder in unseren SchulAGs gemacht. Da im Wald haben wir so viel Spass mit einander gehabt! Ich schreibe öfter in diesem Blog darüber, wie wichtig die Natur ist zur geistlichen Entwicklung von Kindern. Gott hat eine besondere Art mit Kindern in seiner Schöpfung zu sein und Kinder haben da eine besondere Art mit ihm zu sein. One of the great things about being a church plant and not having your own building is that you can have worship services in creative places. On the first Sunday in June, we decided to head to the forest. This was a special children's church that I planned for the kids who attend our after-school clubs and we had a blast together. If you read my blog very often, then you know that I am convinced that being in nature is essential to a child's spiritual development. God has a special way of being with children in his creation and they have a special way of being with him.

Im Grunewald, ein großer Wald mitten in Berlin, sind wir bereits für ein Abenteuer los gegangen. Meine Kollegin, Melinda, und ich haben uns vorher Gedanken über Wanderweg und Spiele gemacht, aber wir haben versucht den Interessen der Kinder zu folgen. Als wir an einen Teil vorbei gelaufen sind, wo viele Stöcke auf dem Boden lagen, wollten die Kinder etwas bauen.  Ein süßes Hüttchen ist daraus geworden. In the Grunewald, a large forest right in the middle of Berlin, we set out on an adventure together. My colleague, Melinda, and I planned the route ahead of time, and had a few games and activities up our sleeves, but we tried to follow the interests of the children. When we passed an area with lots of sticks laying on the ground, the kids wanted to start building, so we all pitched in an made a nice little hut together.

Beginning the story: what's in the box?

Eine Mutter in der Gruppe war Naturführerin und zeigte uns interessante Dinge, z.B. wie die Förster sich um die Tiere und Bäume kümmern. Es gab auch ein Spiel, "Finde etwas", wobei die Kinder Zetteln mit einer Aufgabe zogen. Darauf stand z.B "Finde etwas Weiches" oder "Finde etwas Schleimiges".  (Siehe diese Post für mehr Infos über das Spiel.)  Another adult chaperone was able to act as a nature guide and point out some interesting things to the children. We also played a game called "Find this" in which the children drew slips of paper with instructions to find something "slimy" or "small" or "wet". (Click here for more details about this game.)

Endlich kamen wir zum Ort, wo wir den Kindergottesdienst feiern wollten. Nach dem Mittagessen habe ich den Kindern das Gleichnis von dem Senfkorn erzählt. Da die Geschichte von Jesu um einen klitzelkleinen Samen handelt, der zum großen Baum wird, passte sie sehr gut zum Waldausflug. Ich habe hier erzählt, wie ich das Material für die Geschichte neu gemacht habe, so dass die Unterlage und Baum etwa ein Meter in Durchmesser sind. Die Kinder waren total fasziniert als der Baum vor ihren Augen "gewachsen" ist.Finally, we came to the area where we wanted to have church. After lunch, I told the children the Parable of the Mustard Seed, Jesus' story about a tiny seed that grows into a huge tree. As I mentioned in this post, I completely redid the materials for this story, so that the underlay and tree were about a meter in diameter. Although this story is very short and simple, the children were glued to the story as the mustard seed "grew" into a tree.

In der Kreativphase konnten die Kinder Steine und Baumrinde, die wir auf dem Weg gesammelt haben, anmalen. For our response time, the children painted stones and pieces of birch bark that they had collected along the way.

Der absolute Hit des Tages war aber im Schlamm neben dem kleinen Teich zu spielen. Er was zu frisch um zu baden, aber die Kids hatten Spass daran, den Matsch zwischen den Zehen zu quetschen. Solche taktile Erfahrungen sind neben dem ganzen Spass wichtig zur gesunden Entwicklung von Kindern, und es macht mir eine Freude dies zu unterstützen. The real thrill of the day, though, was playing in the mud on the edge of a small, shallow pond. Though it was too cold to really wade in the water, the kids had fun squishing their toes in the mud. Such experiences of getting dirty and coming into close contact with God's wonderful creation are essential to a child's development, both physical and spiritual,  and I am happy to help provide these experiences for young ones.

Zum Glück fing der Regen erst an als wir uns auf dem Weg nach Hause machten. Es war ein perfekter Tag gewesen! We started home just as it was beginning to rain. It had been a perfect day.

Winterwald / Winter Forest

Während der Winterferien von der Schule machten wir einen Ausflug in dem beliebten Grünewald. Ich gehe gern zu jeder Jahreszeit in den selben Ort hin, damit die Kinder den Vergleich haben, wie anders der Wald aussehen kann.  During the winter holidays from school, we visited our favorite forest, the Grünewald. I love going to this same place in each season so that the kids really notice the differences in the way the forest looks.

I'm not so sure how it would stand up
to the Big, Bad Wolf, but it sure was fun.

Drei Stunden in der Kälte macht hungrig! Wir haben uns danach über die deutsche Küche gefreut: Schnitzel, Königsberger Klopse, und gebratene Ente mit Rotkohl.: )

After three hours in the cold we were starving!  Fortunately, there was a restaurant 

just outside of the forest with some of our favorite winter dishes: Schnitzel, Königsberger Klopse (meatballs in a cream sauce with capers on top of mashed potatoes) and baked duck with red cabbage. Gotta love living in Germany on days like this!

Autumn Nature Table

When chestnuts start falling from the trees, you know it is autumn in Berlin.  Last week, my daughter and I went to the park to pick up the beautiful chestnuts covering the ground. After she went to bed, I set up this autumn nature table for her.  Wenn die Kastanien überall auf dem Boden zu sehen sind, dann weiss man, die Herbst ist da. Letzte Woche haben meine Tochter und ich einen ganzen Korb voll von Kastanien im Park gesammelt. Nachdem die Kleine ins Bett gegangen ist, habe ich diesen Jahreszeittisch für sie aufgestellt.

. . . and acorns from our last trip to the forest. Felt leaves and a beautiful piece of birch that we found on the forest floor help celebrate our Creator's breathtaking autumn palette. 

 . . . und Eicheln vom letzen Waldausflug gemacht. Filzblätter und ein tolles Stück Birke, das auf dem Waldboden lag, helfen uns die bunte Palette unseren Schöpfers zu feiern. 

A wooden candlestick from the Tabernacle reminds us that as the days grow shorter and darker, God's light is always there with us. Ein Kerzenständer aus Holz von der Stiftshüttegeschichte errinert uns daran, dass Gottes Licht und Wärme uns in den kommenden kurzeren und dunkeleren Tagen begleiten werden. 

The next day my daughter woke up and was pleased with what she saw. She immediately began playing with the chestnuts and wooden figures and added a few more nature treasures to the table. Then, she designed the table setting below for our dining table that is right next to the nature table. Am nächsten Tag ist meine Tochter aufgestanden und hat sich sofort über den Herbsttisch gefreut. Sie wollte sofort mit den Kastanien und Holzfiguren spielen und ergänzte alles mit noch ein paar Naturschätzen. Danach machte sie die Tischdeko unten für den Esstisch, der daneben steht.

Raising Memories

A Trip to the Forest / Waldausflug

Have I mentioned that Berlin is the "greenest" city in the world? By this I mean it has more trees and foliage per capita than any other city. There is even a law that each citizen has a right to a tree within a few meters of their home.  The aptly named Grunewald ("Green Forest") is one of the best spots in Berlin. It is a protected forest within city limits complete with ponds, lakes, a sand pit and wild pigs.  When my children need a break from city life, the Grunewald is just a 30 minute train ride away.

I always notice an immediate change in my kids when we visit the forest or some natural setting. They are more relaxed and their concentration levels increase. 

Just a reminder of some of the benefits when children spend time in nature:

- Calming effect that also helps with behavioral problems

-  Enhances cognitive abilities

-  Children are more physically active and less prone to weight issues

-  Nurtures self-discipline.

-  Nurtures healthy curiosity and problem solving

-  Sounder sleep patterns
