On-Line Montessori Course from Karen Tyler

I've received a few e-mails in response to my last post wanting more information about Karen Tyler's on-line Montessori course and my experience with it. So I thought I would share my responses with all of you.

In true Montessori fashion, the course is really what you make of it. Looking at her website, it appears that Karen has re-vamped and changed a few things, but when I was in it there was a weekly syllabus that consisted of readings about the Montessori Method (all on-line books) and downloadable albums. As I've browsed her new website, it seems that she has added things like optional quizzes and written assignments as well as Forum Boards.

The plusses:
- You learn a lot about basic Montessori principles that can be applied across the board with all ages

- You can go at your own pace.
- You have 12 different albums at the end of the course that would cost you A LOT of money if you ordered them directly from a Montessori company.
- The price is incredibly reasonable.
- Karen is great communicator and promptly answers all e-mails and questions.
- There are no mandatory papers to turn it.

The minuses:
- The readings in the albums can get tedious after a while.
- My particular group didn't do much on-line discussion.
- Specifically for Godly Play, you probably only need the Practical Life album.
- It is aimed mainly at work with preschool children.

All in all, I am very glad that I did it. Since I didn't have the time or money to attend a Montessori college, this was an unbelievably good option! I highly recommend it if you are self-disciplined enough to follow through with the readings.

Montessori Training Course Giveaway

Many of you have read my blog posts about the things I have been learning and experimenting with as a result of being a student in Karen Tyler's World Wide Montessori on-line training course. Through my Godly Play training, I became interested in Montessori and wanted to learn more.  However, as a mother of two young children with two part-time jobs, attending a Montessori Institute in Berlin was not logistically possible.  And most of the on-line courses of study were way out of my price-range.  Then, I heard about Karen's course and knew immediately that it was for me.

Karen, who is AMS trained pre-primary teacher with over 30 years of experience, believes that Montessori should be for everyone. Because of this, she offers an on-line course that is unbelievably affordable (read the options here). It can be completed in either 12 or 24 months and at the end you have 12 valuable Montessori albums ranging from the core subjects of Math and Language to extra subjects like Botany and Geography. (If you had to buy albums like these from a Montessori supplier, they would cost far more than the cost of Karen's course!) You work at your own pace, but are able to be a part of an on-line community for discussion and advice. Karen also offers personal consultations per Skype as well. While the course is aimed at work with preschool children, I have been able to use the principles and much of the material in my work with both preschool and elementary-aged children.  The course is perfect for home-schooling parents, children's ministry workers, teachers or anyone working with children who would like to learn more about Montessori! For more details on the course, please see Karen's website.

Now for the amazing offer: Karen is beginning a new class on March 1 and one lucky reader will win a place in her class tuition-free and be the proud owner of 12 Montessori albums!!

For a chance to win this Montessori Training Course giveaway, please leave a comment below stating why you would like to take Karen's course. On Sunday, Feb. 12, I will let my daughter draw the lucky winner's name from a hat. (No high-tech drawing programs here!)

Extra entries if you blog about the giveaway on your blog and link it back to Explore and Express. Just leave me a note in the comments with a link. This giveaway is open to anyone anywhere in the world!

I highly recommend this class to anyone who would like to learn more about Montessori in a systematic, professional way!

On-line Montessori Training Opportunity

After I became more acquainted with the Montessori Method through Godly Play, I began to search for an opportunity to learn more about it in a more formal setting.  Although Berlin has a reputable Montessori Institute that trains teachers, my stage of life with two small children and two part-time jobs makes it logistically impossible to take advantage of it.  I also looked into on-line training, but most correspondence courses from the States cost approximately $3,000 - $5,000.  I remember praying for a workable solution, because I really wanted to be able to incorporate more of the Montessori philosophy into both my work in a church setting and my classroom at school.

Not long afterwards, I read about an on-line course offered by AMS certified Montessorian Karen Tyler that seemed almost too good to be true.  Karen teaches a pre-primary training course that covers all aspects of the Montessori Method from Sensorial to Zoology.  Students learn at their own pace through papers and album presentations.  At the end of the course, a student is the proud owner of 12 Montessori albums that are an incredible resource for any teacher or parent.

And even more unbelievable is the price:  $10 per month!  (She actually has several payment options, and if you pay for the entire course at the beginning, you only pay $150 for everything!) Karen’s philosophy is that Montessori should for everyone, so she purposefully makes the course affordable.

I have been in the class since December and am learning so much from her.  She is very good about communicating with her students and answers any questions that we might have.  What an amazing thing as a children’s pastor or teacher to have a qualified Montessori trainer just be an e-mail away!

There is a new class beginning on March 1, so if you think this might be something for you, please check out her website at: Worldwide Montessori .

If you decide to take the course after reading this blog, please leave a comment.  I’d love to know about it!
