Godly Play Germany Conference 2018 Day 1

Die 5. bundesweite Godly-Play-Vernetzungstagung fand 9.-11. März in Würzburg beim schönen Haus Klara statt. The 5th biennial Godly Play Germany Conference took place March 9-11 at the lovely Haus Clara in Würzburg, Germany with 70 storytellers from all over the country.

Haus Klara in Würzburg
Our theme this year was "Response Time: Support and Encouragement of the Godly Play Process in the Montessori Tradition". Although the Response Time is an important element in the Godly Play concept, it gets much less "air time" at trainings than the mechanics of telling a story. Furthermore, most GP practitioners don't have very many opportunities to participate in Response Time themselves, since they are usually leading the lessons. So we were all very excited to get a chance to play together, be creative and get some new ideas for our own practice.

Our evening started with 4 "stories" about the response materials themselves, sort of a cross between a GP story and a classic Montessori presentation:
- Filzen / felting
- Drei-in-eins Woody Stifte / three-in-one crayons
- Pastelkreide / chalk pastels
- Wortwerkstatt / playing with words

I attended the workshop on felting, where Christiane began with a story about felt, and showed us a technique for dry felting with needles. In the Response Time, we all joined in.

Meine Kunstwerk: eine irische Dreieinigkeitsknote.
My handiwork: a Celtic trinity knot.

Afterwards, we came together again for another "story" about the new books that Godly Play Germany has published this year.

Below you can see Ulrike telling the story of how the books came to be, and Hans Jürgen painting a tree (much like the Mustard Seed!), show the development of our GP literature in German. The base of the tree is the Bible, followed by Jerome Berryman's original works, and then the latest books that have developed out of the German-speaking expression of Godly Play called "Gott im Spiel". (More on these books in a separate post!)

Lent with Older Children

My children are now much older than when I started this blog in 2010. Time does indeed fly, so much so that it makes my head spin! Our son is now 14 years old, and our daughter is 12. They are both an absolute delight, and honestly I wish I had been more like them at their ages.

At any age, it is important for children to have a voice in family traditions, but as my children have grown older, it has become particularly important for them to help decide what will be meaningful for them. I want to be sensitive to the fact that they are older and changing and avoid anything that might be too childish for their tastes.

Those of you who have been reading along for awhile are very familiar with our window sill in the kitchen. : ) This year, I asked the kids to pick out the things that they wanted on the table, and here is what they chose:

My son wanted the color purple and the cross puzzle. My daughter thought the cup with water was important. Both of them insisted on the "desert" with the People of God figures. I added the candle and the Celtic cross. It was very interesting for me to see what had been special to them over the years.

On our kitchen table, we placed a white Easter candle surrounded by 6 purple tea lights for each week of Lent. After Easter, we will replace them with white tea lights for each week of Eastertide and a red tea light for Pentecost. My daughter also plans to decorate the Easter candle.

Some other things we are doing for Lent:

- Reading through parts of the book of Daniel in the Old Testament together, and praying together afterwards. (Not a daily thing, but once or twice a week.)

- My daughter and I just finished book 7 of the Harry Potter series, and have been discussing its themes of Death & Resurrection

- We have set aside a sum of money for each family member, who will then decide on a charity to give it to. We have asked our children to do a bit of research to find out who or what they would like to give to.

Easter Club 2018 Week 3

Ostersonntag rückt näher! Die Kirchenuhr sagt uns so!
It's getting closer to Easter! The church clock says so!

This week we heard Part 2 of "The Faces of Easter". We heard about how Jesus came close to people that nobody else wanted to get close to. How the people that Jesus came close to could suddenly see and do things that they couldn't do before.

We heard about Jesus' last week and last meal with his disciples, and then about his sad death. But on Easter morning Jesus rose again and he was with his friends again just like he is with us now.

We have Jesus's death and then his resurrection. One is sad and the other is joyful. But they belong together, and even if we wanted to separate them, we can't.

That's why we can't leave the story in a straight line. We have Jesus' death that would be the end of the story. But then, we have his resurrection that is a new beginning.

It makes more sense to put everything in a circle, because the story is still going on and we are a part of it.

Afterwards, we talked about the story. What did you like best in the story? What was the most important part?  Which part of the story tells something about you? Is there something we could leave out and still have everything that we need?

New projects this week included Easter egg collages and printmaking with leaves and other things from nature

Easter Club 2018 Week 2

This week we began a two part story called "The Faces of Christ" that gives us glimpses of Jesus in every stage of his life, culminating in his death and resurrection.

Today we heard about Jesus as a baby; as a boy in the temple who gets lost from his parents; about his baptism; and his time in the desert, where he prepared for what God called him to do afterwards.

At the end of the story, we wondered if we could find other objects in the room that might help us tell more about the story. Here are some of the things that the children chose to add to the story.

Kreativphase:  geflocheteten Schmetterlinge! Danke an "The Craft Train" for die tolle Idee! This week we added a new art project: braided butterflies. Thanks to "The Craft Train" for the great idea! The butterfly is an ancient Christian symbol of the resurrection.

We also played and worked more on our other projects.

We could decorate the outside of our finger labyrinths with something that helps us prepare for the Easter and the center with a symbol of Easter. Here, a child drew a picture of working in her garden as the preparation for Easter and then Easter eggs in the middle.

Easter Club 2018 Week 1

It's that time of year again. The time where we prepare for Easter. Let's set the church clock to the correct "time"!

What's in the purple bag? Could it have something to do with the time of purple on our church clock? Something to do with what we call Lent?

When we put all the puzzle pieces together, we have a cross. 6 puzzle pieces, 6 weeks of Lent. Purple is a royal color, but also a serious one, and a little bit sad. Maybe it has something to do with what happened to Jesus on Good Friday?

But then we get to Easter and it has an entirely different color - one of pure joy. And we have another 6 weeks for Eastertide. Enough celebration to get us all the way to Pentecost!

After the story we visited different stations with activities to help us think more about Lent, and how we can prepare for the joy of Easter.

We made finger labyrinths that can help in pur preparation for Easter. We can use them to focus our thoughts when we talk to God, or think more about the story of Jesus.

We also made Easter tree ornaments by pressing leaves, shells and other nature treasures into clay. Thanks to "The Artful Parent" for the wonderful idea!

Some of us like to play more than make art, so we had wooden toys and other interesting things to have fun with.

Afterwards, we had a small feast of fruit and vegetables and laughed and talked until our parents came.
